Genoa’s own great mercantile ambition led the city to ban Jews who were viewed as extremely fearful competitors. Throughout the 16th century, the influence of the Church, and the hostility of the great families of merchants and bankers resulted in the continuous issuing of deportation notices. It was only in 1648, when the free port was established, that Jews were granted permission to settle in the city.
