In 1895, the closure of the old cemeteries of the City of Milan coincided with the opening of the new Cimitero Maggiore (The Greater Cemetery of Milan) in the Musocco District. Given the forced remise of the section in the Porta Magenta complex, the Jewish Community (then known as Israelite Consortium) applied for a section in the new cemetery and obtained one of the sections, classed as Plot 8. It was still in use only a few years ago and mainly has individual often plain burials by entombment, from 1895 to 2010.
At the same time what is now known as the Cimitero Ebraico (Jewish Cemetery) at the Musocco was established between 1936 and 1939 in a separate area at the end of the complex. Originally it was triangular in shape but that has since changed to recent extensions. There are both individual, and family burials with a very mixed range of artefacts. Unlike the Cimitero Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) columbaria and loculi, foreign to Jewish norms were not allowed.
