Jews settled in the city from the late 14th century and for one century lived freely, under the protection of the Duchy of Este. When the court moved from Ferrara to Modena at the beginning of the 17th century many Jews from Ferrara followed their rulers. But a ghetto was created in 1638 and only in 1859 the discriminatory laws were abolished. The community elected to preserve the doors of the ghetto without destroying them up till the 1930s.
