Jewish Tuscany
Jewish Tuscany
The Jewish group in the Pisa is thought to be the oldest in the whole of Tuscany: the first evidence dates from the year 850. The group grew through various migratory waves and, as Livorno (Leghorn), the Medici never imposed the ghetto. During the 1400s, Jews arrived from Rome. Among these was the da Sinagoga family, whose surname was changed to “da Pisa”, who became one of Tuscany’s most important banking family.
