In the 14th century Senigallia held one of the largest fair in Europe. The Jews attended this great bazaar and began to settle in the town. In 1632 the town became part of the Papal States and the ghetto was created. An Italian-rite synagogue dates from 1634. The building originally had three floors and the synagogue was on the top floor. It was moved to the first floor after the 1930 earthquake.
