Jewish Syracuse

JEWISH QUARTER IN ORTIGIA

Syracuse was one of the first cities in eastern Sicily to welcome Jews. The situation changed in late 1492 when all of the Sicilian Jews were forced to leave the island after the long coexistence. Sicily boasted one of the largest concentrations of Jews in the Diaspora. The Giudecca (Jewish quarter) was in the island of Ortigia. All left because of the expulsion of 1492.
